History:
- 1964 – Foundation of the Department of Pathology.
- 1970 – First expansion of Department with fully functional histopathology lab and clinical pathology services in ward.
- 1980 – Second expansion with more lab and working areas in a wing accompanied by Biochemistry and Microbiology departments.
Present Departmental profile:
Department of Pathology provides services for Histopathology, encompassing specialized services like Neuropathology, Cardiovascular Pathology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology, and Renal Pathology along with Cytopathology, Clinical Pathology and Hematology. The department also provides intraoperative rapid diagnosis by cryosectioning and squash cytological techniques. This facility is being routinely provided for clinical departments. Large numbers of referral cases from other hospitals are also received for specialty opinion and diagnostic work up.
The department is equipped with specialized techniques like panel of special histochemical stains including those for Neuromuscular Pathology. Facilities for applying immunohistochemical markers for precise diagnosis are also available. In addition, the department is in the process of starting an EM lab where a state of the art electron microscopic facility shall be available soon. Ultrastructure studies shall be provided for diagnosis as well as research, and samples will be received from other government institutions within the state as well. These ancillary techniques can provide information regarding the exact mechanism involved in the disease process.
List of services:
1. Histopathology including histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
2. Cytopathology
3. Immunopathology (tumor markers & autoimmune workup)
4. Hematology
5. Clinical Pathology
Samples received:
These investigations are carried out on surgical and biopsy specimens, fine needle aspirates, body fluids and blood samples received from the clinical departments of G B Pant Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GIPMER), New Delhi. The Department also accepts specimens from Lok Nayak hospital and other Government hospitals in the state.
Required fee, if any:
All the tests are conducted free of cost and no fee is required to be paid by the patient. However patients admitted to the nursing homes and private hospitals are charged fees for the tests as per the rates decided by the hospital administration.
Spectrum of services rendered with respective venue:
The following services are available to in and out patients on all working days from Dept of Pathology, Academic Block, 3rd floor.

Electron microscop Department of Pathology
Electron microscopy is the ultimate highest standard in diagnosis for many biopsies in Pathology. This diagnostic facility has been recently set up in the Dept of Pathology, GIPMER with the help of Dept of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India under the RRSFP Sahaj Programme. With the permission of the Delhi Govt, our centre has been approved as a referral centre for electron microscopy all Delhi Govt Hospitals as well as other Govt and Non Govt organizations for the purpose of diagnostic facilities and research.
Samples are accepted for Transmission Electron Microscopy in the Dept of Pathology from all Govt and Non Govt organizations under the following terms:
