Departmental profile:
The Department of Cardiology at G. B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi was established in 1964 as a subspeciality of internal medicine of the Maulana Azad Medical College Complex. During the last thirty-five years, the department has shown exponential growth in volume of the high quality patient care and training a large number of cardiovascular specialists many of who are now leaders in their own right both in India and abroad. The department occupies a unique position with regard to the highly technical and specialized nature of health care delivery for complex cardiac disorders both in terms of quality and quantity and currently ranks amongst top five centers of the country. This is amply proven by the large number of visiting fellows and trainees who seek experience in various sub-specialties of cardiology both from India and abroad and a wide referral base enjoyed by it.

Clinics:

  • Outpatient Department and special Clinics: The department has daily morning OPD and 2 special clinics in the afternoon:
  • Pacemaker Clinic on every Wednesday
  • Pediatric Cardiology Clinic on every Friday

List of facilities:

Diagnostic Facilities: The department has two cardiac catheterization laboratories, with one functioning round the clock for emergency services. The diagnostic procedures like cardiac catheterization, digital subtraction angiography, peripheral vascular angiograms and electrophysiology procedures are done regularly. There are three echocardiographic system (adult, pediatric and stress echocardiography), two treadmills, and 24 hr Holter monitoring systems. Head up Tilt table test is also being done


Therapeutic facilities: A variety of catheter based interventions are available for congenital heart disease, adult valvular heart disease, intra-cardiac and extra cardiac shunts, percutaneous coronary, carotid, visceral and peripheral interventions, radio frequency catheter ablation of arrhythmias, permanent pacemaker and AICD implantation, endomyocardial biopsy etc. On average more than 15000 interventional procedures are done every year including round the clock primary angioplasty procedures. More than 150 electrophysiological study and radio frequency ablation are done every year. Emerging interventional procedures like TAVR and Leadless permanent pacemaker implantation are also being done.

Academic activities                                                              

  • The department imparts training in the super-specialty of cardiology to give candidates(7 at present) per year for the award of D.M. (Cardiology).
  • Several fellows from other institutions of the country undergo training every year.
  • Provides fellowship in paediatric cardiology and non-invasive cardiology (Institutional recognition only)
  • The department is centre of excellence in research on valvular heart disease,coronary interventions.therapeutic interventions in congenital heart disease and peripheral vascular disease.
  • In last five years, more than 100 publications have been made in national and international journals. Major thrust has been on valvular heart disease, Coronary artery disease and on peripheral vascular disease.
  • Foreign faculty guest visit for lectures/teaching new interventional techniques

 

Future Plans:

  • Creation of Heart Failure Unit & develop heart transplantation.
