Departmental profile: The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery was started in May 1986. From a meager beginning, the department has taken major strides in the field of Surgical Gastroenterology to reach the current status of a well established center for management of complex hepatopancreaticobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases. The volume of work has increased manifold covering the entire spectrum of digestive surgery including both GI Oncology and benign complex GI problems. The department has kept pace with the developments in the field of minimally invasive surgery, and now performs several GI procedures laparoscopically including Liver resections. The department is currently in process of setting up liver transplant program.

Clinics :The department has daily morning OPD and a Gall bladder Cancer clinic on Wednesday afternoon

Facilities available: Surgical procedures for various hepatic, gall bladder and G I problems. It is a center for management of complex hepatopancreaticobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases and has a lot of experience in minimally invasive surgery, and performs several GI procedures laparoscopically including Liver resections

Department Infrastructure and location:

Beds: The bed strength consists of a total of 72 GI Surgery beds (42 beds in the ward, 24 bedded GI surgery Intensive Care Unit,

6 bedded high dependency unit) and 12 bedded liver unit (ITU/ HDU) and three functional operation theatres. A dedicated Liver theatre- ITU complex is under construction for the Liver Transplant Program.

Documents required for patient care:

  • Referral from another hospital or department
  • Details of tests already done
  • List of medicines/treatment already prescribed

Required Fee:As per estimate issued by treating doctor, if any

Academic activities:

1. Two postdoctoral, MCh students per year are admitted in the department

2. Several surgeons from the AMC (Army Medical Core) are trained for 2 year duration.

3. In addition, the department attracts surgeons from all over the country who are associated with the department as clinical observers to get an insight into the spectrum of Surgical Gastroenterology.

4. Over 50 research papers have been published in reputed National and International Journals. The Department has to its credit one of the largest experience in choledochal cysts, biliary strictures, gall bladder cancer, Portal biliopathy, in the country.
