Blood Bank

Blood Bank

Faculty/In-charge:

Dr. Swagata Biswas BTO, Medical Officer

Departmental Profile:-

  • The Blood Bank in G. B. Pant Hospital started in the year 1980. G.B.P.H Blood Bank has come a long way from a humble beginning as an off-shoot of L N J PN Blood Bank. It is one of the most important service departments of the hospital catering to blood requirements for patients from surgical as well as medical departments. Blood Bank started 24 hours emergency services from the year 1989. In addition to meeting the regular requirements of GBPH patients, Our Blood Bank also kept pace with advances in the field of Transfusion Medicine. Being a tertiary care hospital with super specialty clinical departments, the transfusion services have always faced challenges and successfully adopted advanced Equipments, Techniques and procedures.

We take pride in being the first in the following areas:-

  1. Blood Bank G. B. Pant Hospital is first amongst Delhi Govt. Blood Bank to start Blood Component separation services. The year 1996 saw the tragic out break of Dengue Fever, which soon took an epidemic proportion. During that time, there was no facility for Blood Component Separation in any of the Delhi Govt. Hospitals Blood Banks. Blood Bank G. B. Pant Hospital rose to the occasion to shoulder the responsibility. We were the first hospital notified by Delhi Government as Platelet Services Provider during Dengue Epidemic. Blood Bank G.B.P.H. still works like a Regional Transfusion Center with respect to Platelet products, thereby helping patients from other Govt., Private Hospitals & Nursing Homes in the NCR.
  2. We were the first Delhi Govt. Blood Bank to start Apheresis procedure in the year 1992. At that time, Plateletpheresis was being carried out at National level by only a very few other centers.
  3. We extended the facility of Apheresis to the patients with special Neurological Condition like “ MYSTHENIA GRAVIS ”etc with the support of Neurology Dept. of our Hospital in 1992. Therefore, we became the “First Blood Bank” in Delhi to start Therapeutic Plasmapharesis and to provide treatment to such patients. In some cases,, this is the only treatment available to many of these patients.
  4. From Sept., 2006, the facility of Therapeutic Apheresis was also extended to other GNCTD hospitals. We already have performed a range of procedures like LEUCOCYTAPHERESIS etc. and have the facility to perform many more like PBSC & Bone Marrow procedures if required, for GBPH and LNJPN patients. Currently the facility is being operated from Neurology department.

Blood Bank, G.B. Pant Hospital is always ahead in providing Blood and Blood components to other Blood Banks including Regional Transfusion Centers like LNJP Blood Bank & Indian Red Cross Society Blood Bank.
